Why we need Water Softeners?

  • In many areas of EMEA Region,  the degree of hardness of the drinking water is strongly increased. The high degree of hardness in the drinking water produces more lime scale.

  • The lime scales appears in:

    • Bathroom (Glass bath screens)

    • Electrical Appliances

    • Pipes

    • Heating System

    • Boiler

    • Washing Machine

    • Tea or Coffee Machine.

  • The use of a water softeners, also called de-calcification systems:

    • Avoid presence of lime scales in the shower, the bathtub or in the washbasin 

    • Avoid lime scale formation and its incrustations in pipes and electrical appliances

    • ​Increase the product life of the machines and decrease their repair costs

    • Reduce the consumption of detergents, cleaning agents or shower gels – savings up to 50% in terms of costs

How Does Water Softening Work?

  • The water softening via ion exchange is a treatment process. In this process cations are exchanged with sodium ions under use of cation exchange resins.

  • Cations are responsible for the water hardness, in particular calcium ions and magnesium ions.

  • A strongly acidic cation exchanger in the form of sodium is used as water softener in this process.

  • The cation exchanger is loaded with sodium ions and exchanges them equivalently with the ions of the hardeners calcium and magnesium since one salt is exchanged with another during the process of water softening

  • This process is also called neutral exchanger.

Structure Options

Water softening systems are in four structures:

Single Tank Softener-Light Commercial-SCST Series: 

  • Pressure tank is separately grouped with the salt dissolving tank.

  • It consists of brine tank, pressure tank and the actuator.

  • The system elements are separately set-up from each other.

  • It enables the user to use high amounts of salt and resin since  they are separate.

  • The pressure tank is filled with a high-quality softening resin.

  • The ion exchange resin is the cation exchanger in water softening process.

  • The cation exchanger has a particularly high absorption capacity and a durability of about 10 years.

  • ​The brine is required for conducting the generation. 

  • After the water softener is connected, you need to regularly refill the salt tablets.

  • No running cost of operations excluding the salt tablets.

  • The regeneration concentrates on water quantity, dependent from the amount of treated water; or time control of the regeneration.

  • When the capacity of the softening system is reached, the system will switch into the regeneration cycle

  • The actuator adjusts the hardness degree of water by blending valve.

  • The blending valve blend treated water with raw water.

  • Without adjustment, treated water has a degree of hardness of 0° dH. The desired hardness degree of water is adjusted by blending process.

  • Options:

    • A strongly acidic cation exchanger for higher absorption capacity​

    • Flow-meter in actuators

Double Tank Softener (Duplex softener)-Light Commercial-SCDT Series:

  • Dual Softeners for Buildings, Compounds, Large Residential and Light Commercial Applications

  • It can be used as pre-treatment of reverse osmosis systems

  • It consists of brine tank, two pressure tanks and the actuator.

  • One pressure tank is operational and the other pressure tank is at standby mode.

  • The system elements are separately set-up from each other.

  • It enables the user to use high amounts of salt and resin since  they are separate.

  • Both pressure tanks are filled with a high-quality softening resin.

  • The ion exchange resin is the cation exchanger in water softening process.

  • The cation exchanger has a particularly high absorption capacity and a durability of about 10 years.

  • ​The brine is required for conducting the generation.

  • For this reason, soft water is available at all times without interruptions!

  • The actuator adjusts the hardness degree of water by blending valve.

  • The blending valve is preinstalled on the entrance/exit side of the control valve.

Commercial & Industrial Softener (Twin-Triplex Softener)-SCCI Series:

  • Twin alternating or regenerating, triplex or four tank systems available.

  • Between 1 m3/h (240k Fr/regen.) and 50 m3/h (12.000k Fr/regen.)

Mechanical controlled softeners (Mechanical Backwashing):

  • Complete package on a steel construction basement with valves

  • Double column or single column type

  • Tailor-made solution with steam pack, pre-filter, sand filter or descaler

Automatic controlled softeners (Automatic Backwashing):

  • Backwash Rates 50% bed exp. at 60ºF.

Control Valve Options

 

Electronic Demand Meter SystemsSystem regenerates when necessary by monitoring the amount of treated water used daily, this system regenerates only when necessary to supply continuous, treated water with substantial salt and water savings. It is also called as volume time control or fully electronic control system.

 

Clock Timer Systems: Two simple settings automatically regenerate this system at a set time each day or once every few days

Regeneration of the Water Softener

  • Water softening process can be reversed as regeneration for the water softener.

  • For this purpose, sodium ions are offered to the ion exchanger in surplus.

  • A saturated solution of sodium chloride can be used, which can be produced by dissolving common salt tablets, for example. If the system is in operation, you have to pay attention to a sufficient development time of the brine of at least five hours, before the saturated sole can be used for regeneration.
     

Water Softener Resin 

  • In the drinking water treatment system,  we use a resin, which has an approval for drinking water and food.

  • In the boiler water treatment system, a softening of 0,1 ° dH is mandatory (boiler houses, before reverse osmosis), we use a resin with a monodisperse (monospheric) grain size distribution with an extremely fast exchange kinetics.

Other Features

  • Special resins in conjunction with an anthracite under-bedding.

  • Bypass valve, modular control valve, with simple programming commands.

  • All fittings feature O-rings or threaded seals for leak-proof operation and oversize  brine tank.

  • Safety overflow fittings are standard. These systems automatically bypass during regeneration.

  • Waterwell Digital Water Treatment is a twin-tank system that provides continuous soft water all day continously.

  • One tank is always in service, while the other tank is in regeneration.

  • The system can be configured for either twin alternating or twin parallel operation

  • It is latest in a long line of innovations with its twin-tank, one-control design provides continuous soft water.

  • Its digital system allows for optimizing through selected programmable parameters.

  • Its system electronically monitors water usage and stores it in NOVRAM memory. This allows in-depth analysis of water usage patterns and provides diagnostic insight.

  • This system backwashes with softened water to eliminate hardness carry-over.

  • The system is also extremely efficient, using as little as 110 liters of soft water to regenerate.

  • This system is a combination of 960 Series valve with electronic controls.

  • The controllers have a large four-digit display, allowing the user to easily view the remaining capacity and flow rate. The controller also clearly displays which tank is in service, and which is in regeneration or standby

  • This system meters and stores water usage data in static memory. This data can be displayed, allowing the user to monitor usage and fine-tune the cycle settings accordingly.

  • Sand filtration is frequently used and very robust method to remove suspended solids
    from water.

  • The filtration medium consists of a multiple layer of sand with a variety in size and specific gravity.

  • Sand filters can be supplied in different sizes and materials both hand operated or fully automatically.

  • Raw water pump is used for generating necessary operating pressure in the pressure sand filter.

  • Raw water is passed through Sand Filter at a pressure of 3.5 kg / cm2 to reduce the suspended solids present in the raw water.

  • The filter will effectively remove up to 30 – 50 micron of the suspended solids to less then 5 ppm. The filter will have to be washed with raw water for 20 to 30 minutes daily. To filter the partials below 30 – 50 micron cartridge filter is used.

  • The Multi-Grade Sand Filter is a depth filter that makes use of coarse and fine media mixed together in a fixed proportion.

  • This arrangement produces a filter bed with adequate pore dimensions for retaining both large and small suspended particles.

  • The Multi-Grade Sand Filter is for the removal of suspended solids & undissolved impurities like dust particles & heavy metals etc. doing so it reduces turbidity.

  • The Multi-Grade Sand Filter is an ideal solution for the systems with high sediment, silt, sand, and turbidity.

  • Media Filters are ideally suited for use where stringent water quality standards are required or where higher levels of suspended solids are present.

  • These applications can include re-use applications, water pre-treatment applications for reverse osmosis and deionization systems or as a pre-treatment system prior to a disposable bag or cartridge filters.

  • The multi-media water filter systems operate for much longer periods of time (five or more times as long at the same filtration rate) before backwashing is necessary because the bed can hold more turbidity.

  • Turbidity is trapped and held throughout the entire bed depth, rather than the top one or two inches.

  • Multi-media filtration is much better suited for use in a closed pressure tank since cracking of the bed, and subsequent breakthrough of turbidity is virtually eliminated and the need for visual inspection is unnecessary.

  • The use of pressure tanks (rather than open basins or filters) is an obvious advantage for point-of-use filtration and could also be of real importance in the filtration of small community water supplies.

  • More rapid filtration flow rates in multi-media filtration allow the use of smaller diameter tanks with equal or better results.

  • A very high degree of clarity is achieved in the filtered water because of the fact that the finer particles of garnet at the bottom trap finer turbidity particles.

  • Multi-media water filters have:

    • Higher flow rate than a single-media sand filter (5.5 to 8 gallons per minute, as compared to 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute in a 12 inch diameter tank).

    • Higher flow per square foot of bed area (This is 14 to 15 gpm per square foot of bed area, as compared to 2 gpm per square foot of bed area).

  • Multi-media water filters can remove ​sediment, turbidity, iron, unpleasant tastes and odors, suspended particles, and unwanted color, all of which are commonly found in surface water.

  • Multi-media water filters can be used in a variety of service conditions including, but not limited to: industrial, municipal, and institutional applications.

Control Valve Options

 

Electronic Demand Meter SystemsSystem regenerates when necessary by monitoring the amount of treated water used daily, this system regenerates only when necessary to supply continuous, treated water with substantial salt and water savings. It is also called as volume time control or fully electronic control system.

Clock Timer Systems: Two simple settings automatically regenerate this system at a set time each day or once every few days

Regeneration of the Water Softener

  • Water softening process can be reversed as regeneration for the water softener.

  • For this purpose, sodium ions are offered to the ion exchanger in surplus.

  • A saturated solution of sodium chloride can be used, which can be produced by dissolving common salt tablets, for example. If the system is in operation, you have to pay attention to a sufficient development time of the brine of at least five hours, before the saturated sole can be used for regeneration.

Water Softener Resin 

  • In the drinking water treatment system,  we use a resin, which has an approval for drinking water and food.

  • In the boiler water treatment system, a softening of 0,1 ° dH is mandatory (boiler houses, before reverse osmosis), we use a resin with a monodisperse (monospheric) grain size distribution with an extremely fast exchange kinetics.

Other Features

  • Special resins in conjunction with an anthracite under-bedding.

  • Sand filtration is frequently used and very robust method to remove suspended    solids from water.

  • The filtration medium consists of a multiple layer of sand with a variety in size and specific gravity.

  • Media Filters are ideally suited for use where stringent water quality standards are required or where higher levels of suspended solids are present.

  • These applications can include re-use applications, water pre-treatment applications for reverse osmosis and deionization systems or as a pre-treatment system prior to a disposable bag or cartridge filters.

  • The multi-media water filter systems operate for much longer periods of time (five or more times as long at the same filtration rate) before backwashing is necessary because the bed can hold more turbidity.

  • Turbidity is trapped and held throughout the entire bed depth, rather than the top one or two inches.

  • Multi-media filtration is much better suited for use in a closed pressure tank since cracking of the bed, and subsequent breakthrough of turbidity is virtually eliminated and the need for visual inspection is unnecessary.

  • The use of pressure tanks (rather than open basins or filters) is an obvious advantage for point-of-use filtration and could also be of real importance in the filtration of small community water supplies.

  • More rapid filtration flow rates in multi-media filtration allow the use of smaller diameter tanks with equal or better results.

  • A very high degree of clarity is achieved in the filtered water because of the fact that the finer particles of garnet at the bottom trap finer turbidity particles.

  • Multi-media water filters have:

    • Higher flow rate than a single-media sand filter (5.5 to 8 gallons per minute, as compared to 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute in a 12 inch diameter tank).

    • Higher flow per square foot of bed area (This is 14 to 15 gpm per square foot of bed area, as compared to 2 gpm per square foot of bed area).

  • Multi-media water filters can remove ​sediment, turbidity, iron, unpleasant tastes and odors, suspended particles, and unwanted color, all of which are commonly found in surface water.

  • Multi-media water filters can be used in a variety of service conditions including, but not limited to: industrial, municipal, and institutional applications.
